Pre History in the Périgord

The Perigord is an area rich in the history of Early Man. Experience 400,000 years in the Perigord.

The VEZERE VALLEY  is also known as the valley mankind.  Homo sapiens settled in caves in the chalky cliffs. There a few wonderful sites you can visit and appreciate the paintings which still exist today around  LesEysiers and the caves at Lacaux are certainly worth a visit.

 

The Lascaux complex also has several series of classical concerts which are performed in the beautiful church. There are  numerous exhibitions of painting, pottery, woodcarving, ironwork, tapistry, weaving, etc. Other underground amazing sites not to be missed are the abysm –the Gouffre de Proumeyssac – (Close to Le Bugue), – the Grotte de Halle in Domme, or the Grand Roc at Les Eyziers-de-Tayac.

Another fascinating visit is the Prehistoric Park at Tursac.  It is a journey in time from Neanderthal to Cro-Magnon.  Visitors are able to take a walk on this trail and tread in the footsteps of our distant ancestors.
