The South of France is nothing short of an idyllic experience. You know about the more traditional activities available in this picturesque land: wine tasting, visiting the local markets, visiting wine farms, shopping, the list goes on. There is another exciting activity available that you might not have considered: visiting chateaux. 

The Dordogne has a rich history that is partly represented by these magnificent structures. You do not have to be a history enthusiast to get excited about visiting these castles. Let’s look at some of the hidden gems you can visit on your next trip to the Dordogne in the South of France.

2. Château des Milandes

Visit the former residence of the incomparable Josephine Baker. The castle itself exudes an illustrious charm and is maintained by a devoted team. Visitors from all over the world come to see the home of this American idol.

The castle originally dates back to the 10th century.  It was owned by an eminent family in the French aristocracy, the Caumonts. It’s medieval splendor has not been lost over the years. It has held on to its history and remains a relic of the time.

You can also take some time to explore the gorgeous gardens. The beautifully manicured bushes provide a wonderful backdrop to enjoy the simplicities of nature and the outdoors. 

If you are interested in a more action-packed afternoon, look no further than the bird of prey display. The castle is home to 60 birds of prey in its 6-hectare park. Here, the birds live in harmony with one another. Performances are put on display by the castle’s falconers, Patrick and Steeve. It is not a sight to be missed!

3. Château de Beynac

This 14th century chateau offers spectacular views of the surrounding area along the Dordogne river. Catch a glimpse of life in the middle ages as you explore the different rooms and chambers within the castle.

You can explore the grounds on a self-guided tour with a map or audio guide given to you at reception. This enchanting French castle will take you back in time to the Hundred Years War. Chateau de Beynac represents the epitome of the middles ages so much so, that some scenes of the film, “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc”, were filmed here.
